What Is a Minecraft Skin Made Of?

A Minecraft skin is a flat PNG image, 64 pixels wide and 64 pixels tall, that gets wrapped around your character’s body like a paper cutout around a box. The template is split into sections for the head, body, arms, and legs. Most modern skins also include a second, slightly larger “overlay” layer for each body part, which lets you add hats, sleeves, jackets, and other details that sit on top of the base skin without replacing it.

You do not need to draw pixel by pixel from scratch. Every skin editor starts you off with a blank humanoid template already mapped out, so you just fill in the colors and details.

How to Make a Minecraft Skin: Step by Step

1. Choose a skin editor. You can use a web-based editor, a mobile app, or the official skin creator on the Minecraft website. Most are free and let you preview your design on a 3D model as you work.
2. Start from a template. Open a blank humanoid template rather than starting from an empty canvas. This keeps your proportions correct and saves you from mapping out the body parts yourself.
3. Design the base layer. Fill in skin tone, clothing colors, and the main design across the head, body, arms, and legs. Zoom in for detail work like facial features and shoe designs.
4. Add overlay details. Use the second layer to add hair, hats, jackets, or accessories that sit visually on top of your base design without needing to redraw the whole body part.
5. Export as a PNG. Save your finished design as a PNG file. Keep the exact pixel dimensions the editor gives you, since resizing can distort the texture.
6. Import it into Minecraft Bedrock. Open Minecraft, go to your profile or the Dressing Room, choose Custom Skin, and select the PNG file you exported. Your new skin appears in your skin library immediately. This step only works on Windows, Android, and iOS or iPad, since those are the only platforms that let you browse local files.
7. Equip and play. Select your custom skin from your library and jump into any world. Other players in multiplayer will see your design as long as your skin is set as active.

Playing on Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo Switch? Console versions of Minecraft Bedrock do not include a file browser, so there is no way to import your own PNG skin directly. Console players are limited to Marketplace Skin Packs, Character Creator items, and any skins already tied to their Microsoft account.
